...so cyberpunk started of as a new genre in sci-fi literature and became this real rustic fantasy of the 80s. What differentiated this from the sexy alien fantasy of the 70's was that technology had abandon its premier objective to aid mankind to prevail beyond the laws of nature, thus eliminating the illnesses and disasters that once held us back.
Cyberpunk held an attitude similar to that of the pro-anarchy, where what was once a described to become a beckon for our brighter future, became a blinding light best described as a teen sat by their computer display for far to long.
Rather than enabling us, technology held us back in ways that once sculpted our characters and challenged us to become more than just mere beings restricted by time. Cyberpunk saw technology eat away at one of the main structures that made us human. From everyday choirs being cut down by handy gadgets, awkward social encounters being avoided with the help of instant messaging and online match making sites.....we became less mobile beings.
Once upon a time the government became our enemy, is the same to be said about technology?
Anyway, im a big fan of cyberpunk movies and comics, but as that cold stainless steel fantasy nears its started to lose its appeal and has become more of a living nightmare.
Maybe its just me but technology today is so revolutionary its kind of creeping me out.....
(funny how ghost in the Shell is set in 2029...can you imagine a world filled with half human half cyborgs in the next 19(!!!) years?)
I could go on about this topic for ages (as i always do), but I wont and will leave you guys here
We've been hoping for the best but we may just end up planning for the worst.
Since this blog is ment to be about "fashion" I'll get right back on topic...
Now cyberfashion was pretty big in the late 90s. This was even before the first Matrix came out, but the look never made it out of the club scene and kind of died out in terms of public interest.
But I guess most of you have an idea of what it ment (Cher "believe" video kind of says it all) and today those carrying the many yards of black leather that this fashion mantel was are designers such as Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh and Balenciaga (f you rule out those designers in Japan)

The look can arguably be an appeal for the techy youth that camp outside Apple store like its holding a massive revival of the Woodstock Festival, but when designers like the wholly trinity up there charge premium prices for Trash Metal Couture.....the look will still remain as undesirable as a Walkman and a underground culture for the enthusiasts....
